Enterprise Automation/Malcolm-Racing Take Home Two Third Place
Finishes in Debut at NASA's California Speedway Event
Friday Report:
The Team Enterprise Automation/Malcolm-Racing started off their 2008 season with great weather and a great track
- California Speedway, in Fontana, CA. After the off season, both the car and driver, Derrick Malcolm, got off to a
good start. With the warm up, the team got a feel of the car and broke in a set of new Hankook sticker tires. The car
continued to feel good in qualifying and Malcolm turned in a fast lap of 1:59.8 placing him 3rd in class and 13th out
of 42 cars overall.
The actual start of the race season got off to a slow start as the field was made to complete a second agonizing
pace lap around the 2.8 mile course when the starter was not pleased with the line up of the field. By the second
time around, the green flag was finally dropped and Malcolm got caught hitting the rev limiter in second gear and fell
back six places heading into NASCAR turn 1. But after getting back up to speed by the time he hit turn 3, diving into
the infield, Malcolm had gained back 3 places. He then quickly passed another lower classed car heading down the first
infield straight. After being held up for a couple more turns, as the opening lap unfolded, Malcolm passed another
car just passed the kink after the hairpin. After hitting the oval for the second time, he passed a PTC Audi TT after
getting a good run coming off of the infield. Malcolm then caught up to a PTD Mazdaspeed RX-8 just getting around a
PTC Scion tC. The rest of the race involved the Scion trying to get back around the Mazdaspeed RX-8 and our Sentra
SE-R trying to pass both. Malcolm had a couple of looks around the Scion, but couldn't successfully make the pass.
The team finished 3rd out of 4 in class, Performance Touring - PTD, and 13th overall with a fast lap of 2:00.1.
Saturday Report:
Saturday brought another great day at California Speedway. Malcolm said the car felt well balanced on day 2 of
racing and had a great warm up. Qualifying turned into a pseudo qualifying race when the PTC Scion tC worked his way
up to our car after a couple of qualifying laps. For the next few laps the Scion was doing his best to work his way
past. Finally the power advantage of the PTC Scion tC, and a slightly hot entrance to the hairpin, allowed the Scion to
make the pass. Results of qualifying placed the team Enterprise Automation/Malcolm-Racing Nissan Sentra SE-R 3rd in
class and in 17th out of 39 cars overall, with a fast lap of 2:00.1. The PTC Scion tC qualified in 16th and one of
the Mazdaspeed RX-8's in 15th, all within a half second.
The start of the race on Saturday went great, with Malcolm part of a three wide group going in to turn 3, heading
into the infield. This put our car in the mix with both PTD Mazdaspeed RX-8's, and the PTC Scion tC. After a couple of
laps the Scion tried late breaking one of the RX8's into turn 12, just after the last infield straight. Malcolm took
advantage of the opening and passed one of the RX8's and the Scion. Shortly there after, Malcolm hit the oval following
the first place PTD RX8 with the PTC Scion tC and other RX8 following closely behind. The PTC Scion tC got a run on the
straight and started to make a pass on the outside. Malcolm jumped in behind the Scion to try and draft and make a pass
on the first place RX8. He pulled up along side the RX8 in NASCAR Turn 1, but coming out of NASCAR turn 2 the draft
wasn't pulling as much, and the RX8 pulled back ahead. At the same time the other RX8, also using the draft and pulled
out and past as well. Malcolm then followed both the RX8's and the Scion into the infield. The order stayed the same
over the next few laps, with our car bump drafting the second place RX8 down the main straight on the oval. After
getting a good run on the RX8 coming out of the hairpin, Malcolm tried an inside pass heading into turn 12. Unfortunately
he carried a bit too much speed into the corner and shot between both RX8's, cutting the corner. After waiting for the
trailing RX8 to get passed Malcolm pulled back in line, and the eventual finishing position. The team finished 3rd out
of 5 in class, Performance Touring - PTD, and 14th overall with a fast lap of 2:00.6. It's going to be a great season
for in-class competition, with strong competition coming from the Mazda backed RX8's.
